Common Caterpillar Problems We Fix
HEUI injector failures — Cat’s Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injector system is unique to Caterpillar. These injectors are oil-actuated and electrically controlled. When they fail, you get white smoke, rough running, hard starting, and oil dilution. We test each injector individually on-site.
Coolant leaks (front cover) — The C15 and C13 are notorious for developing coolant leaks at the front cover / gear housing area. This requires careful diagnosis because the leak can appear to come from multiple locations. We pressure test and pinpoint the source.
ACERT system issues — The ACERT intake valve actuation system on C13 and C15 engines was Cat’s answer to emissions without using EGR (pre-2007). When the actuator or valves fail, you lose power and fuel economy. Many trucks have had this system deleted, but we can repair either configuration.
Jake brake problems — Cat engines are known for their excellent engine brakes, but the rocker arms, solenoids, and slave pistons wear over time. We adjust and repair jake brakes to restore full braking power.
Turbo failures — Whether it’s a single turbo 3406 or a twin-turbo C15 ACERT, turbo failures cause low power, black smoke, and oil consumption. We inspect wastegates, bearings, and actuators on-site.
Oil leaks everywhere — Older Cat engines leak. Valve covers, rear mains, front covers, oil cooler lines — we’ve seen them all. We diagnose the source and fix it so you’re not leaving a trail down I-95.
